ZuHause

ZuHause is a project that explores the difference between two german terms for being at home: “zuhause” and “daheim” .

Nowadays, people move from one city to the next. Borders have become more open and the labour market often determines where people live. However, the reasons are no longer just job hunting or dissatisfaction with existing political views at home, but also curiosity about other cultures, freedom for self-determination and sometimes even love. People often set off in search of the new and unknown. However, arriving in a new place is not always as easy as you had imagined. The entire circle of friends has to be rebuilt, the surroundings only become familiar slowly and even the smell of home is different to what you are used to.

It’s difficult not to think about the language, as this is usually the biggest barrier to overcome.New habits, different everyday routines, unfamiliar humour and even the new cuisine – everything is new territory for those who have left home. On top of that, homesickness. Constantly missing family, friends and the familiar. Being infinitely alone for the first time without anyone else being able to understand. The dilemma between returning and the desire to stay in the newly defined home.

Is it possible to find a home in a foreign country?
Can the difference between home and homeland disappear at some point?
Do the boundaries between people still exist?
